The Vietnam war was one of the most violent conflicts in history, as well as the perfect opportunity for both sides to try out some new weaponry. By the time it ended, thousands of people were dead and many of the battles got their own pages in history books, some thanks to the brilliant tactics employed, other just for the sheer violence that took place.
The Hell in Vietnam is an FPS that aims to portray the conflict and give you the opportunity to participate in a variety of dangerous missions throughout the Asian jungle and get a taste of the actual war in the process. It also features a few intense scenarios aboard a helicopter, which have you eliminating the troops on the ground before they get the chance to bring you down.
However, the game does not make any effort to differentiate itself from the rest of the first-person shooters out there, since it employs no new ideas or mechanics. Thus, you just have to clear the levels and shoot every enemy that you happen to come across, using a modest collection of weapons to do so, as well as a few team mates, every now and again.
Beside the fact that you do not get the chance to do anything else than just shoot enemies that run toward you in an orderly fashion, the locations themselves lack credibility and the level of detail is incredibly low. Moreover, the character animations are not very well-made either, while the low polygon count certainly does not help with the issue.
On the other hand, the weapons are a bit more detailed and they are modeled after famous models used in the Vietnam war, both from the American and Vietnamese sides. Hence, you can wield the famous M15 A1 assault rifle and the M79 CAW grenade launcher, as well as the PPsh 41 automatic and the RPG-7 rocket launcher, depending on whether you stick with the weapons you receive at the start of the mission, or you pick them up along the way.
Although The Hell in Vietnam cannot be called entirely bad, since it is completely function and you can definitely have a bit of fun with it, it quickly loses its appeal after a mission or two. It doesn't bother to bring anything new to genre, other that the same old mechanics.
