Being a detective means that you always have a lot of work on your hands, especially if you live in an area where many bad things happen on a regular basis. Unlike in movies and TV shows, cases are not open and shut in the span of a few days, unfortunately. Hence, many cases remain unsolved for months or even years, depending on how much evidence there is to pinpoint a suspect.

The Darkside Detective is a retro point & click adventure game in which you play the role of a detective who tackles the weirdest cases around town. Not only that, but most of these cases prove to involve some kind of supernatural powers, including demons and gateways to other dimensions. Granted, the whole thing is coated with a thick layer of humor, so it’s not as serious as it sounds, not by a long shot.

The main character’s name is Francis McQueen, and he has had a few problems with evil in the past, which is why he became obsessed with the paranormal. Thankfully, he uses his knowledge to save the chief’s family one day, which is how he gets to be part of a special investigation unit called the Darkside Division. As you might have guessed, this division is called upon whenever something strange happens around town.

The gameplay is very simple and to the point, although you still have to think a bit in some cases. Hence, you are usually trying to find useful objects and combine them in such a way as to obtain an answer to the questions that surround every case. Dialog is also important, because you can find out valuable information by just talking to the other characters.

As for the graphics, the pixel artwork is not exactly amazing, but the designers have managed to express a lot with very little. Hence, entire landscapes come to life from just a handful of colorful pixels, not to mention the characters themselves. The music is very nice as well, especially since it contributes a lot to the overall atmosphere of the game.

The Darkside Detective should be quite the sight once it is complete, especially if the developers keep doing such a good job until the end. Hence, if you like humorous adventure games with the occasional clever puzzle, this should definitely be on your list.
