Whenever aliens decide to take over the Earth, they always forget about a major flaw of theirs, or they underestimate the human spirit and end up being defeated by hope and a risky plan. Moreover, there is always one hero that rises above everyone else and leads humanity to victory, despite the serious technological disadvantages and the big gap between the two species when it comes to intelligence.
TerraWars: New York Invasion is a first-person shooter that allows you to experience one of the grimmest scenarios out there: the entire Earth is being destroyed by vicious aliens and every able man is called into action, in order to try and put up a fight. You happen to be a young medical student who, after being drafted into the National Guard, finds himself the lone survivor of a failed mission.
Thus, you must try to survive and make your way to the next military base, which is easier said than done, what with all the aliens that roam around the city lying in ruins. However, you do meet with some other soldiers from time to time, who help you overcome larger enemy packs, but they are not that central to the plot. In the end, the lone medical student ends up completing his mission and making a difference in the war.
The familiar first-person perspective makes the game feel cozy and easy-to-handle, but the level design is not what you would expect and it definitely disappoints in multiple occasions. Thus, although the background landscapes appear to be pretty apocalyptic and nicely done, the actual 3D environments are nowhere near as atmospheric or detailed, which kind of makes the entire game feel cheap and unfinished, from time to time.
Gameplay-wise, on the other hand, everything revolves around your ability to aim and shoot as accurately as possible, since the aliens can cause a lot of damage in a pretty short time, if you are not careful. However, you can always use cover and duck behind various objects, in order to avoid staying directly under enemy fire and preserving your hitpoints for as long as you can.
TerraWars: New York Invasion is definitely not the kind of game you would remember a few years from now, especially since the story itself is not at all original or memorable. Moreover, the mechanics and the gameplay itself are too common and familiar, which in turn leaves you with a mediocre product and not enough reasons to suffer through it.
