Space simulators have a pretty loyal fanbase, although the expectation are quite high as well. The fans of the genre know exactly what they want from a game, and it’s not particularly easy to please them all, even if there have been plenty of titles that managed to do so over the years. Hence, jewels like Freespace, Freelancer, or the X series are being held in high regards by the community, and with good reason.

Tarr Chronicles tries to fit in and provide the players with a unique experience, even if most of the elements are borrowed from similar titles. The story and the general atmosphere of the game are quite nice, on the other hand, so you can definitely find something to cling onto if you give it a try. There’s a rather intriguing plot evolving in the background as well.

Speaking of which, the action takes place in the future and humans have managed to get out of the solar system, only to be greeted by constant war and death. Your role is to play as a fighter pilot and try to save humanity from complete annihilation, together with your elite squadron. The other allied ships are controlled by the AI, but they get the job done and they’re not as annoying as you might think.

One of the most interesting features of the game is the fact that you have the possibility to customize your spaceship with a variety of new components. Thus, you can make it more versatile, or decide to specialize and opt for speed instead of heavy artillery. There are plenty of such choices to make, so you can at least have fun with this feature for a while.

As far as the visual quality is concerned, the graphics engine does a good job of relaying the usual space atmosphere, with nice views and plenty of attractive locations. The ships are also quite detailed and nicely modeled, which should make the confrontations that much more intense. Unfortunately, the soundtrack is nothing out of the ordinary and it just blends in with everything else, so don’t expect too much in that regard.

All things considered, Tarr Chronicles is definitely not a game future bards will sing about, but it is tolerable and it holds some intriguing features nonetheless. However, if you are looking for something good, you are still better off with the classics.
