Although the stories usually differ quite a lot, RPGs feel pretty predictable most of the time, probably because the core concepts are the same when it comes to characters and how the plots evolve. Hence, it’s always exciting to see something that does not feature the classic “hero saves the world” cliche, even if the story is far from perfect.
Selling Sunlight is a role-playing game that puts you in the role of a merchant as he goes on a quest to retrieve his stolen identity. Even if it sounds fairly straightforward, there are many elements that make the game world unique, including the main character’s interesting condition. You also get to make choices that affect the way other characters perceive you.
As mentioned before, the main character is pretty weird, given the fact his face was stolen by the Sun because he broke some ancient rules. Thus, he has a distinctive mask on his head that warns people about his past, but at the same time, he is also an honored merchant. Because of this, most people are very confused once they lay eyes on him, which makes for some very interesting conversations.
Your travels take you all over the world in search of answers, with the ultimate goal being to retrieve your identity from the Sun itself. However, there are other obstacles to overcome before that, most of which require you to have conversations with other characters. Thus, you are free to choose your approach when you talk to people, depending on whether you want to be perceived as arrogant, honest or even charming.
One thing that impresses about the game is the artwork, because the hand-drawn landscapes are extremely beautiful and colorful. Granted, sometimes it can be a bit tough to sort through all the colors and take in the whole landscape, but these are rare cases. It’s also possible to move freely across the map and during certain scenes, so this is definitely not a glorified visual novel.
All things considered, Selling Sunlight might just have what it takes to become a bestseller, especially if the story keeps getting better later on in the game. Hence, you can support the developers by participating in their Kickstarter campaign.
