A good story is the key to a successful adventure title, coupled with memorable characters and interesting puzzles to solve along the way. However, the said story does not necessarily need to be too serious, since humor can work just as well, especially when it is done right. Runaway is a series that owes its success to humor as well, with barely an ounce of seriousness included for good measure.
Runaway 2: The Dream of the Turtle is the long-awaited sequel to a great first episode and it aims to just continue the story from where it left off, even if everything was fine and under control at the end of the first part. However, trouble is never too far away from the lovable couple, especially not when they plan on taking a vacation on a tropical island and relax for a while.
As you might expect, things go sour pretty quickly and Brian needs to come with a solution yet again, which obviously implies traveling all over the world, meeting with peculiar people and tackling the most challenging obstacles yet. Some old characters from the first installment make an appearance as well, including the quirky computer hacker Sushi Douglas, who plays his role in the events that unfold over the course of the story.
The sequel maintains the same point-and-click mechanics, which means that the game plays out in very much the same way as the original, as well as any other adventure title on the market. Thus, you must observe the environment around you, pick-up objects, talk to people and combine the items in your inventory in order to come up with a solution to the conundrum you find yourself in most of the time.
As the series accustomed you, the humor is present this time around as well, ranging from small jokes regarding your approach to a certain problem, all the way to movie and video game references, not to mention the situational humor that evolves from the events unfolding on the screen. Thanks to the cartoonish, yet very detailed visual style, the graphics are more than decent and they make for a great atmosphere.
Finally, Runaway 2: The Dream of the Turtle is definitely a successful title, even if it does not quite reach the same quality standard as the first title. The puzzles are strong, however, as is the general dialogue and the characteristic humor that spices up the action with every occasion it gets.
