The science fiction genre is certainly one of the most volatile out there, because it can be approached from basically any angle and molded to fit anyone’s idea of a unique universe. However, a lot of imagination is needed to come up with something both interesting and compelling at the same time, because although strange ideas are welcomed, parts of them must also make some kind of sense.
Project Nomads certainly got the originality part right, since it is packed with innovative ideas and it certainly makes your mind wander. The game is also unique from a technical point of view, because it blends a variety of genres into one. Thus, you get to experience real-time strategy mechanics, engage in furious first-person shooter sequences, and explore the breathtaking environments from a third-person perspective.
As far as the story is concerned, the action takes place on a secluded planet named Aeres, which is packed with floating islands way up in the sky. The two factions that duke it out on this world are the Nomads and the Sentinel, with you playing on the Nomads side. However, the plot itself seems to be written by a twelve year-old, especially when it comes to the dialogue and the explanations as to why everything is happening.
Your main goal throughout the game is to take control of a floating island and use it to move around, battle enemies, and generally explore the environment. Powerful artifacts can be used to erect useful buildings, such as defensive turrets, hangars, and the like. Some of these buildings can be directly controlled, which means that you can man the turret when the enemy strikes, or use the planes to engage in action-packed dogfights up in the clouds.
From a technical point of view, there are some problems when it comes to the camera in the third-person mode, but you can get used to it after a while. The graphics are quite striking and good-looking as well, which means that the environments are detailed and memorable in most cases. Not a lot of effort went into the audio segment, which is quite the shame, since a good soundtrack could have helped with the atmosphere a lot.
In the end, Project Nomads has all the makings of a memorable production, but it lacks the polish in the technical department, unfortunately. Not only that, but the plot that holds everything together is very shaky and badly told, so it usually just ends up breaking the immersion.
