Turn-based strategy games are not that popular nowadays, at least not in their classic form. In fact, there are many turn-based games out there, but the majority of them are based on collectible cards and decks. Hence, the genre is a tad anticlimactic when there are no units or heroes, so it’s nice to see something classic for a change, even if it features some new ideas.

Prodigy is an upcoming turn-based tactics game in which you get to control small teams of powerful heroes in order to kill monsters or defeat other players in the arena. The whole idea revolves around picking the right units for the job and using their abilities as wisely as possible, so there’s definitely a lot of strategy involved in the formula if you are open to the learning process.

There’s a PvE mode included as well, which allows you to fight against the AI and win battles in order to unlock new content. New heroes can be obtained as well, and your battle results are uploaded to the leaderboard. This allows you to indirectly compete against people from all over the world, as well as expand your collection and hear more of the story behind the game.

You can also face players more directly in the multiplayer mode, which comes with both ranked and normal modes, depending on your commitment level. In case you want to have a game with a specific person, that’s possible too, so the game is pretty polished in this regard. The tactical options are a bit too unclear in the beginning, especially since there are no tooltips for the possible actions, only small buttons of different colors. However, you can easily get used to this after a while.

Lastly, the visuals are quite impressive in certain regards, but they could use a bit of work in a few other aspects. Hence, the unit models are gorgeous, and the animations are very fluid and smooth as well. On the other hand, the backgrounds and the arenas are not as enjoyable as they could have been, which may have a negative impact on the atmosphere as a whole.

All things considered, even if this is but a demo, Prodigy still needs a lot of work in order to be as fun as it advertises. Hence, the boring scenery and the confusing interface might get to you after only a few minutes of gameplay.
