Power Drive 2000 is one of the few games you can describe as an authentic retro arcade racer while still being able to enjoy today’s fluent gameplay and excellent design possibilities. It’s a game born out of the love for the 80s games, music and cinema.
Without a doubt Power Drive, 2000 brings one of the most impressive designs we’ve seen from the indie racing scene for a while now. For those who have a thing for retro games, mainly racers, Power Drive 2000 is eye-candy.
The demo provides a short incursion into the time trial mode on one track, but it’s more than enough to get a clear vibe of how the game will look and sound like. Power Drive 2000 is bathed in neon glow, it has crisp and clear details, the car design is wonderful and the gameplay is as smooth as the fabulous soundtrack is.
The colors in Power Drive 2000 and the effect that triggers when you activate the futuristic car’s boost are enough to hypnotize you. Not to mention that the car reaches high speeds in a very short time, which is just what you want when you have drifting.
In fact, the boost and drifting are the two core mechanics of the game, and you must use them in a wide range of game modes. Controlling the car is easy, but mastering the way it acts and reacts on the track will take time, and that’s a good thing since most racing games take a very short while to perfect.
Power Drive 2000 is intended to offer game modes such as Collector, Outrun, Vaporizer, Gauntlet, Turbo and will even allow multiplayer sessions. It was enough to see how the game looks and feels to acknowledge that it has tremendous potential, but seeing that gameplay variety is also in the blueprint, that’s just outstanding.
To sum things up, Power Drive 2000 looks awesome, the car handles great, the music is fantastic and together with all the small details make for an exquisite experience. I don’t think I’ve used that word before for a game, but this seems like the right time.
Power Drive 2000 is still in very early stages of development, and you will encounter some bugs and glitches. Such as, hitting a tunnel wall and then finding your car stuck in the asphalt. The game is being put together by a one man team, but it’s coming along nicely.
