The easiest thing a creative person can do is borrow ideas from somewhere else and pass them as their own, and it’s happening all the time in the entertainment business. Granted, it’s not always a bad thing, but you can attract a bigger audience if you come up with an original concept, even if that is obviously a lot more difficult to achieve and put into practice.
PANIC at Multiverse High! is about as silly as the name implies, but it’s also very engaging and amusing, which is exactly what’s needed of a visual novel to keep you busy. Dialog and role-playing are the cornerstones of the game, since most of your progress is achieved by making choices and choosing between three different stats, each one of which opens up new narrative roads.
In essence, the story puts you in the role of a high school student that attends Multiverse High, where all sorts of monsters and interdimensional beings have gathered. Your purpose is to become the coolest guy there, which is achieved by taking on the bully, as well as showing off your superhero powers. You can also make friends and get involved in relationships, depending on your preferences.
There’s a surprising amount of content crammed into the game, especially when it comes to how you can customize your character and his journey. You can pick between four classes and three different stats, each one of which opens up new options along the way. Hence, you can replay the game multiple times and witness different events, as well as reach multiple endings depending on your journey.
Since the action takes place in a pretty bizarre world, you shouldn’t be surprised at the artwork and the character design, because most of it is not going to make too much sense. There giant lizards and many other strange creatures, and the artwork is colorful enough to depict them in all their glory. Even the soundtrack is jolly and intense, although it can get a tad repetitive every now and again.
In the end, PANIC at Multiverse High! can keep you busy for hours on end if you are a sucker for a good story and a unique setting, not to mention the fact that you can change a lot of things about the plot and your character. Thus, it’s certainly worth a shot if you are a visual novel fan.
