The formula for good point-and-click adventure games is not complicated at all, but the finished product needs to feel unique and leave you with a memory, otherwise it just gets categorized as a simple pixel hunting quest. Due to the relatively slow gameplay pace and a general disregard for intense action, they need to captivate the players through story, characters, or even the puzzles themselves.
J.U.L.I.A. was made a reality by the people who wanted to play it, since the developers took advantage of various crowdfunding communities in order to bring their vision to life. The result is something that adheres to what the public wanted to see, together with a fascinating plot and a handful of curious characters that try to solve a mystery involving alien planets, human colonists, and the disturbing death of an entire spaceship crew.
As such, you play the role of Rachel, an astrobiologist that’s part of the expedition sent to investigate potential life forms in a newly discovered solar system. Due to the long journey between the two systems, all members of the crew had to subject themselves to cryosleep, in order to conserve energy. When Rachel wakes up, however, she finds out that every other colonist died on the planet they were meant to investigate, with J.U.L.I.A. - the ship’s own artificial intelligence module - and an exploration robot by the name of MOBOT being the only ones left.
When you are not engaging the two machines into dialogue, the rest of the game is spent trying to figure out a variety of things. Whether you need to mine the planets in the system in order to perform reparations on the spaceship, or find the private chat logs of crew members, every new mission keeps you invested into the action. Various mini-games are part of the equation as well, each one of which has different rules and they can be quite brutal with your gray matter.
From a technical point of view, the game uses the classic pre-rendered environments to simulate the world and the landscapes, which makes for some very breathtaking vistas along the way. The dialogue is voice acted and the actors do a good enough job at it, but there is a lot of written text that expands on the story and provides you with rich insight on the situation.
J.U.L.I.A. is as adventure games should be, since it doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to the puzzles, yet it remains beautiful and intuitive from a newcomer’s point of view. Moreover, the story is very intriguing and sufficiently long, especially since you definitely won’t be able to get the hang of each puzzle right away.
