There are games that redefine the way we look at certain things, whether due to an incredible story featuring memorable events and characters, or just because the mechanics are so good they are bound to be reused in every other game that comes after. However, there are also the games that are just there to have some fun with, featuring nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to gameplay, graphics, or story.
Incoming Forces is the sequel to a well-received first part and it practically builds on what was already there, while changing just enough to trick you into believing this is a new game. It really doesn’t matter, on the other hand, because the level of fun happens to be the same and the gameplay is just as action-packed as before, with enough explosions and enemies to please everyone.
Story-wise, the events now take place on an alien planet, where you play the role of the aliens, for a change. Hence, your job is to help protect your planet from the human invaders, by destroying their ships and decimating their armies. There’s nothing deeper going on and no actual characters to talk about, so all you have to concentrate on is blasting your way through wave after wave of enemies.
To keep the experience from getting too boring, you get to switch vehicles from time to time and experience different kinds of challenges. There are both ground and air machines you can pilot or drive, each one of which delivers a certain amount of firepower. Not only that, but they are also more effective in certain situations, as long as you are able to properly handle them.
The graphics engine is not necessarily revolutionary, but it did the job back in the day and it can still be enjoyed even now, although it may be a bit of an eye sore in certain situations. The models look good and the special effects are bright enough to cover the poor shader quality, on the other hand, so you can at least let the action and the explosions distract you from the visual quality.
Incoming Forces may not be the brightest or the prettiest out there, but it can certainly deliver when it comes to making you happy. The non-stop action and the constant waves of enemies manage to distract you most of the time, so you can definitely give the game a try if you do not mind the rather ancient looks.
