Survival-horror games are designed to inspire fear by forcing you to run instead of fighting the monsters that hunt you down. Sometimes the gimmick works as intended, but other times the developers do not manage to create the proper atmosphere. Hence, the gameplay mechanics are very important, given the fact that the action must unfold smoothly and feel real in most regards.

Home Sweet Home is a first-person horror game with stealth and survival elements, in which your goal is to stay alive and escape from a strange place. The mechanics are not extraordinary, but then again it’s more about the experience itself and how scared you are over the course of the story. Hence, you can run into some very terrifying moments throughout the adventure, although the demo at hand is pretty short and lackluster.

The whole thing takes place in a location inspired by Thai horror myths and stories, so at least you can find a bit of originality in this regard. Thus, the environments feature many oriental influences, and so does the create you have to avoid along the way. Speaking of which, your main enemy is a female spirit of some kind, whose only purpose is to hunt you down and torment you.

Although a lot of the game revolves around jump scares and similar tactics, there is a bit of psychological horror included as well, mainly because the environments really do inspire fear sometimes. The narrow corridors and dark rooms can hide all manners of creepy things, so you are always half-expecting something jump at you. On the other hand, the story as a whole is just not mysterious enough to really fuel your nightmares.

As far as the graphics go, you can tell that the developers have put quite some work into them, especially in terms of lighting and level detail. The game even supports VR headsets, although you might have to deal with motion sickness, given the fact that you have to be seated. Lastly, the sounds are decent as well, except for the fact that the audio controls in the options panel do not exactly work as intended.

In the end, Home Sweet Home has all the right makings of a great horror game, but it’s not quite there yet. Thus, the atmosphere needs a bit more suspense to keep the adrenaline flowing, and some of the jump scares are too predictable to cause any damage.
