Gyromancer is a match-three game from the famous PopCap studio and the massive Square Enix publisher.
Both the developers and the publisher are saying that Gyromancer is a puzzle RPG (whatever that means) that blends elements from Bejeweled and other RPG games from the Square Enix catalog. That might true to the extent of the story, which is just as incomprehensible and annoying like any other game from the Japanese publisher.
It’s not clear why they ever bother to put games like these in their own special category when they already have a very well defined genre. Sure, it has some other elements that make this game stand apart from all the others, but that’s to be expected, especially since it’s coming from such a big studio.
This brings us to PopCap, which makes some great games. For the most part, anything that PopCap releases is an immediate success, but that’s not the case with Gyromancer, which just seems complex and complicated, but without the added benefit of also being fun.
Gyromancer also features a storyline, but it’s convoluted and not really all that interesting. I imagine that not many people want to have some sort of good versus evil story in their match three game, but they couldn’t just leave it alone.
Each level than the player starts is actually a battle with another creature. You need to make combinations of three of more by rotating the pieces around. It’s not complicated, but it’s somewhat unnecessary. You also have an animal under your control, and he has some special attacks that are charged with certain colors.
It’s not a difficult game, but the rules are not clear from the start. Also, for some weird reason, the game plays in a letter box format, even if it’s a widescreen display. Why that happens is a mystery that only Square Enix can answer.
The good news is that the game has some pretty low system requirements, so most people out there will be able to play Gyromancer without the need of a very powerful computer. The demo only features some of the first fights, so you can get an idea of what’s happening in the rest of the game.
