Although anime is still a pretty underground phenomenon outside Asia, there are a couple of series that have managed to gain worldwide recognition. You only need to think of Dragon Ball, Death Note or Full Metal Alchemist to see the potential of the medium, but there are many others examples as well. Attack on Titan is another huge name around the world, even if only two dozen episodes have been released so far.
Guedin's Attack on Titan Fan Game should tell you everything you need to know right in the name, because that’s exactly what it is. However, this is certainly not the first fan game based on the popular anime series, so it’s only natural to be skeptic. On the other hand, only a few minutes of game time are needed to realize that this is extremely polished and well-designed, unlike most fan games out there.
To begin with, the VME system is the bread and butter of the series, because it was specially designed to explain how the anime characters tackled the problem of being able to reach a titan’s weak point at the base of their neck. In the game, you move around using the same grappling system, and it actually works quite well, even if there are some issues with it at the moment.
Both mouse buttons are required in order to fire the two grappling hooks, and you need to keep them pressed for the hooks to remain attached. This is a bit counterintuitive at first, but it’s easy to get accustomed to the system. The system allows you to move very quickly and efficiently, at least after you manage to get used to the fast-paced gameplay. You can also dodge and perform a few interesting acrobatics, although that comes later on.
As a matter of fact, the game is designed to become a multiplayer experience, which means that teams of human players are going to fight against titan assaults. At the moment, there are no actual titans in the game, only a training dummy, but the attack mechanics seem to be included, or at least an early version of them. The graphics are gorgeous, even if only the main character is textured and properly animated right now.
In the end, Guedin's Attack on Titan Fan Game may look and play very nice at the moment, but there’s a lot more work to be done for it to become an actual game. It’s also worth remembering that there could still be legal issues, even if the creators state clearly that this is a fan game to honor the series.
