A third-person shooter depicting yet another incursion into a fictional modern conflict. #Global Ops #Commando Libya #Libya conflict #Global #Ops #Commando
Shooters are slowly becoming more and more realistic with every new release, which is clearly visible in franchises like Battlefield, Armed Assault and Call of Duty. However, not all developers seem to be paying attention to the actual mechanics behind the realism displayed by the aforementioned titles, since there still are plenty of generic video games out there advertising themselves as being realistic, action-packed and team-driven.
Global Ops: Commando Libya is a third-person shooter that aims a bit too high and is stubborn enough to challenge the big boys, by promising more than it can handle. Moreover, it does so while suffering from a serious deficit of originality, coupled with faulty gameplay mechanics and an incredibly dull storyline. Naturally, all of these combined cannot add up to something good and the verdict can be quite obvious from the first few moments spent inside the game.
As far as the main campaign and the plot is concerned, it all starts with a crashed B-52 that goes missing after it crashes somewhere in the ocean. It turns out that a Russian mafia leader got his hands on the nuclear bomb that was being transported aboard the plane and he aims to sell it to the highest bidder, who in this case happens to be a vicious dictator in Libya. Hence, an elite team of commandos is sent to deal with the problem and recover the nuclear warhead.
The most annoying thing about the gameplay is the fact that you are forced to make extensive use of the cover system, which wouldn't be too much of a problem, if the said system wasn't broken and highly dysfunctional. This also happens to be the only thing you can do in the game, since every mission asks you to move from cover to cover and kill the terrorists that spawn in front of you.
The team-driven action mentioned by the developers is not exactly present per se, given the fact that you are alone most of the time. To top things off, the AI is laughable as well, making the already repetitive missions very easy to clear and equally easy to forget. Visually, the game is does not look bad, but the lack of detail becomes obvious once you get a better look at the models and the textures decorating the environments.
Playing Global Ops: Commando Libya is hardly any fun, unless it happens to be your first encounter with a computer or a video game. Everything about it is generic, unpolished and unoriginal, not to mention the excruciating linearity and the badly implemented cover system.
