Although multiplayer is a huge part of modern video games, most of the interactions take place online nowadays, which is by no means a bad thing. The fact that you can connect with people from all over the world is a great feeling, but at the same time it’s hard to forget about the couch split screen days. Thankfully, there are still a few games out there that provide you with this option, even if most of them are on consoles.

Fortune & Gloria is a 2D action-platformer with retro graphics and an angry soundtrack that tries to bring back the good old days of same-screen co-op. Not only that, but it also includes a random level generator, which should theoretically provide you with endless fun. At the moment, the game is still a very early demo, so there are quite a few problems with it. Even so, it’s worth keeping an eye on it to see how the whole thing develops in the future.

To begin with, there are two characters in the game, namely Nate “Fortune” Cobb and Gloria Guerrero. They do not seem to possess different abilities at the moment, and even though their weapons look different, they actually shoot the same kind of bullets. They must work together to complete the missions, and you can do that with a friend or let the AI control the other character.

As mentioned before, this is an early demo, so there are a few problems. The AI is the first and probably the biggest of them, mainly because it’s basically useless. The computer-controlled characters can’t even jump over obstacles properly, which is why you will most likely lose your partner a few seconds into the first level. The actual missions are not that “random” either, since you basically have to do the same thing every time.

The only difference is the level layout, which changes a bit every time you press restart. The changes are not big, especially since there is only one environment at the moment. The enemy AI is just as bad as the companion AI, which means that whenever they are not dying to traps, they are too busy walking with their back turned to notice you anyway.

With all this being said, Fortune & Gloria still has a lot of potential, but there’s a lot of work to be done in almost every aspect of the game. The idea is good, and things are probably a bit better in co-op, but things fall apart as soon as you meet the first enemy. Thus, we can only hope that the developers address these issues by the time the full version is released.
