Although most people would associate video games with the type of activity that requires good reflexes or a strong, strategic mind, some genres rely heavily on writing in order to keep the players engaged. Stories are the cornerstones of adventure and role-playing games, which is why you can find many movie-worthy ideas and concepts in some of them. Thus, there’s really no reason to look down on the medium just because video games used to be simple distractions back in the arcade era.

Forgotton Anne is part puzzle game and part platformer - kind of what happens if you decide to mix point & click puzzles with the exploration mechanics from a platformer. However, the overall experience feels more like an interactive anime, especially thanks to the great artwork and the seamless transitions from cutscenes to actual gameplay. On the other hand, you have the freedom to influence the story along the way, so things are not set in stone.

The main story takes place in a place called the Forgotten Lands, which is where everything that is lost finds its place. Thus, the lands are full of common items that have been misplaced or forgotten by their human owners, including things like old toys or socks. You play as Anne, the guardian of the lands, who is also responsible to keep the order and help her master, Bonku, find a way to the real world.

As mentioned before, the genre mixture is quite unusual, but it works fairly well in most cases. Hence, part of your time is spent interacting with various objects in order to find clues and solve puzzles, while the other part is spent jumping around in order to reach a different part of the zone. Anne can even take advantage of a primitive pair of wings to make impressive leaps, as well as use some kind of magic to interact with items and even fight enemies.

On the other hand, there are some downsides as well. Probably the most annoying of them is the fact that it can be a bit difficult to control Anne sometimes, since the game is not quite as responsive as a platformer should be, especially if you want to make pixel-perfect jumps. This is not a huge issue, but it can drain your enthusiasm sometimes if you are used to more fluid controls.

Lastly, Forgotton Anne features incredibly beautiful graphics, most of which are hand-drawn animations that can hardly be distinguished from an actual anime movie. This helps a lot with the atmosphere, especially since the world design is very enjoyable as well.

Thus, it’s hard not to recommend the game, especially if you are less interested in gameplay mechanics and more inclined to appreciate a good story.
