At the time of its release, F.E.A.R managed to make a permanent mark on the industry and become one of the most successful first-person horror shooters out there. However, this only happened because the developers managed to refine almost every aspect of the game, including the story, atmosphere, graphics and even the AI, in order for everything to work together toward the same common goal.

F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate aims to build up on that and provide the fans with a whole new side to the conflict and the story from the first part. However, seeing how this expansion is actually stand-alone and thus not require the original release in order to be enjoyed, it should be only natural that the changes are a bit more serious than they were in Extraction Point.

Fortunately, they really are, since the entire plot is somewhat different, although still related to the original one. Hence, your task is to find out what Perseus Mandate is and get to the bottom of a mystery involving Nightcrawlers, which are the powerful new enemies you must face off against. However, the entire story takes place at the same time with the one from the vanilla release, which means that you may still get to catch glimpses of familiar locations.

In order to diversify the gameplay a bit more and provide you with some additional firepower, a few new weapons are available as well, such as the grenade launcher, a new type of rifle and even a chain lightning gun, which is definitely fun to see in action. Despite that, you might find it more difficult to take the AI by surprise, since a few minor improvements make sure that the enemy soldiers are able to effectively organize themselves and assault your position when you least expect it.

The graphics department is largely the same when it comes to engine capabilities and shaders, but the environments received more care from the designers and you can really get into the atmosphere when you are walking down a narrow and barely lit corridor. The horror elements are still there, featuring massive quantities of blood, scary paranormal events and a variety of other psychological imagery that aims to induce fear.

Even if F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate is obviously not a full sequel, it still could have used some more content, especially since the replayability of the campaign is not that high and there aren't many other ways you can take advantage of what the game has to offer. Thus, stand-alone or not, a longer story would have made the game much more enjoyable.
