There has been an increasing number of roguelikes with pixel graphics that have been released in the in the last months and you might think that that would make them less desirable. Luckily, most of them are indie titles that surface with a unique and personal identity.
So is the case with Dungeon Souls, a 2D roguelike RPG with hack 'n' slash elements which comes with features that can be found in other games but even if it seems familiar, it does its own thing.
Dungeon Souls feels right from the first seconds of playtime. Controls are easy to master, gameplay is fluid and things work perfectly.
The only thing that might get to you a bit is the camera shake effect when you get hit by one enemy or several at a time. It tends to sway a bit too much and can cause you to lose track of where your character is. However, after a while you get used to it.
Dungeon Souls features procedurally generated levels which means that you will never experience the same layout and monster population twice. Everything you get is randomized and if you die, you die for good. Ironically, the game is about fallen heroes that seek a mysterious orb within the dungeon so that they can once more walk in the land of the living.
When it comes to combat, Dungeon Souls is really good. You have multiple classes to play as, and you can also let the game create a random one. Each character has his unique attacks and abilities, and their combat style can be enhanced by picking up various items that drop as loot.
They will increase your hero’s strength, damage, movement speed or they can provide passive abilities that help you out a lot. Dungeon Souls features simple gameplay that's not actually simplified. It allows you to enjoy exploring and fighting in the dungeon without being over the top tough. At this time, it’s balanced just the right way, between being fun to play and challenging.
To sum things up, Dungeon Souls has plenty of similarities with games from the same genre but even so it has its personal identity and touches. If you’re into 2D roguelikes, Dungeon Souls is a really good choice.
What's new in Dungeon Souls Beta:
- Balanced enemy damage. They should not anymore be overpowered now. But still, it will depend on your hero’s stats and build.
- Enemies should not be able to GO and SPAWN spawn near the merchant
- Found the bug regarding the confusing control which set “UP ARROW” as “U”. Hopefully it should be fixed now
- Changed the description of the THORNMAIL to “+2 damage to enemies on collision”
