Roguelikes need no introductions nowadays, given the fact that there are practically hundreds of them splattered all over Steam or similar platforms. Randomly-generated levels have become much easier to program, which in turn allows developers to provide players with seemingly endless content for their money, even if quantity does not always mean quality. On the other hand, some games can be a success if they feature the right mixture of elements.
Cybrus is a 2D survival game with roguelike elements, in which you play the role of a nameless champion trying to clear a dungeon of monsters and various other nefarious creatures. The main gimmick lies in the fact that this dungeon is never the same, so if you die, the layout of the levels changes as well, making it impossible to learn the path to the end by heart. Thus, the difficulty level is definitely up there, and that’s not even counting the gameplay itself.
Speaking of which, your character can either shoot magic bullets or use bombs, much like in the classic Bomberman or similar games. You can find various power-ups and upgrades that allow you to deal more damage, but in order to get them you have to explore the dungeon, which is no easy task. Every room features a combination of obstacles and enemies, the latter of which come in many varieties as well.
Although you move through the dungeon room-by-room, some of them feature multiple doors, each one of which can lead you to a different place. However, these doors feature a distinct mark if something particularly dangerous awaits you on the other side, such as a boss battle. This allows you to prepare before going in, which is a nice touch. Rooms containing upgrades are also marked, making it difficult to miss them.
As far as the controls are concerned, all you have to do is move and shoot, although there’s a different button for every direction you wish to shoot in. This can be a bit annoying at first, but it becomes second nature after only a few minutes. The graphics are not bad either, but they are obviously very simple, given the fact that the dungeon was designed to be random, so there’s little-to-no hand-drawn artwork to be found.
Even if it has its fair share of flaws, Cybrus can easily keep you busy for a few hours, at least if you can cope with the high difficulty level. You can always go back and try again without fearing boredom, thanks to the randomly-generated dungeon layout that changes with every playthrough.
