Circa Infinity

Circa Infinity was one of those games that didn’t strike me as particularly interesting at first. That does happen from time to time, and as expected, I was terribly wrong to doubt it. It’s a 2D, pixel-minimalistic platformer that makes you dizzy and maybe a tiny bit spasmodic (figuratively speaking, of course).

Circa Infinity has a very simple and excellently polished idea for the gameplay. You have a pixel human, and you have to guide him through a series of circular worlds until he reaches an end-level portal. Throughout the journey, you’ll have to avoid being killed by demonic figures and gargoyles that wonder or stand around the circular contours.

In a way, it’s like you’re Dante, and you have to cross not nine but a lot more circles until you reach inner-Hell. And yes, as you would suspect, there are boss fights, and they go down in a way you would not expect them to.

The whole Dante’s Inferno bit might be a bit of a stretch for an interpretation but this is basically the perfect example of Bullet Hell gameplay applied to a platformer. It’s really tough. Which, in all honesty, is what keeps you at it.

Circa Infinity’s gameplay has all the trimmings of a well thought out game. There’s a clear learning curve that defines the progression of the game and as you reach new levels, although you have all the time in the world to master the controls, the gameplay still kicks your butt a lot of the time.

It gets intense after only a few levels and the gameplay mechanics also pile up to confuse you a bit more. If you enjoy a challenging game, you’ll love this one because it gets more interesting as you play. Circa Infinity won’t be just about jumping from the exterior of one circle to the other and then into another.
