The future may not be as bright as it is in TV commercials, but it certainly cannot be any worse than it’s pictured in post-apocalyptic stories. Whether it’s nuclear war, famine, zombies, or a combination of multiple factors, books and movies present a world no one would enjoy living in. However, it can be fun to pretend, which is why survival games happen to be so popular nowadays.

Apocalyptica turns the drama up to eleven and it goes way further than simple zombies or nuclear bombs, by invoking Satan himself into the picture. As such, the world in which the game takes place is subjugated by a neo-devil and his dark forces, with people being ripped apart by demons and mayhem on a regular basis. However, the light is not dead yet, which means that someone is fighting on the behalf of good as well.

Naturally, you play with the good guys and the main agenda throughout the game is to defeat Satan and free the world from evil. You get to play with a variety of characters along the way, each one of which comes with special abilities and a few advantages or disadvantages. Hence, whether you wield a sword, a rifle, or both at the same time, it’s still up to you whether you can finish the levels or not.

There’s not a lot of purpose in trying to make sense of the game, on the other hand, because it is incredibly annoying to play it in the first place. The combat system is flawed and very inconsistent, especially when it comes to collisions and the way your weapons interact with the enemies. Not only that, but the attacks are extremely repetitive, even if there are some spells you can unlock later in the story.

The artificial intelligence governing the enemies is almost entirely absent, except for the fact that they move around and they come at you if you enter their line of sight. Other than that, they usually just come near you and wait to be killed, with is not a very successful tactic. Unfortunately, this breaks any kind of immersion and it practically ruins the challenge, if there ever was one to begin with.

When it’s all said and done, Apocalyptica had a pretty nifty idea at its core, especially since the subject was rather interesting. However, the gameplay is almost impossible to bare through, so you probably won’t last more than a few minutes before being forced to admit your defeat.
