Ape Out Demo

Hotline Miami managed to gather a cult following, mainly thanks to the great gameplay mechanics and memorable soundtrack. After that, many other developers tried to emulate its success or expand upon the idea, and some actually managed to do so. In fact, one could still add more elements to the mix and create something equally as fun.

Ape Out is a fast-paced action game in which you have to clear room after room of enemies using your strong ape arms, as well as a variety of other objects you happen to find around the levels. As you might imagine, it’s important to move quickly and react to everything around you, otherwise your character is quickly killed by all the bad men who try to capture you.

The ape’s arms are your only weapons most of the time, but then again they are powerful enough to pulverize anyone standing in the way. You can sometimes pick up heavy doors or even people in order to use them as shields, as well as throw them around when you do not need them anymore. It’s certainly fun, but at the moment the levels are too short to form an accurate opinion on the game as a whole.

Since the whole idea is to move as quickly as possible and react to everything around you, it wouldn’t be great if you couldn’t do so because of the controls. Thankfully, they are very snappy and precise, especially since you can use both a mouse and keyboard or a gamepad. The latter is recommended for a more comfortable experience, but you can use the one you are most comfortable with.

Lastly, the graphics are worthy of a mention as well, because the designers have done a wonderful job when it comes to the colors used throughout the levels. The colors actually change as you move through the stages, especially if you happen to get hurt. This makes the whole experience feel very dynamic, while also looking very artistic at the same time.

In the end, Ape Out appears to have everything it needs in order to keep you engaged for a few hours, even if that’s not the case with the short demo at hand. However, it should be a great action game once the whole thing is out.
