The generals behind the greatest military operations ever had a tremendous amount of responsibility on their shoulders, especially when the success of these operations had the potential to determine the outcome of the entire war. Experience and intelligence are two of the most important factors when it comes to coming up with the right strategy, but a bit of luck can go a long way as well.
Air Assault Task Force is a real-time wargame that certainly does not make it easy on you and it tries to provide you with an authentic simulation of a real battlefield. Thus, everything is as basic as possible from a technical point of view, but the AI and the simulation of the warfare itself comes quite close to the real deal, considering the fact that a version of this game is also used in the military.
The game focuses on the impact helicopters had on the war, because they managed to ruin a lot of supposedly airtight tactics, thanks to their mobility and versatility. Hence, previously inaccessible spots for vehicles were now just a call drop away, not to mention the fact that some of these helicopters also had weapons mounted on them. Naturally, the Vietnam War was the first conflict in which they proved their worth, by easily dealing with the jungle and overcoming the vegetation obstacles.
At a first glance, the game is quite simple to play, and there are only so many commands you can give to your units. However, after a few more clicks and a scenario or two, it becomes clear that you really need to pay attention to how and when you move the troops, otherwise you lose the battle before it even gets a chance to begin properly.
The interface can appear intimidating at first, because there’s nothing else on the screen beside a map full of lines and a few symbols that somehow must represent your units. It gets easier to read and understand after a while, although you can also change the look and play using real satellite imagery, to push the realism level even further.
When it’s all said and done, Air Assault Task Force is definitely not the kind of game strategy newbies might fight interesting or enjoyable. However, if you consider yourself a veteran of the genre and you really want to see how a real simulator feels like, then this may very well be the title to finally make you concede.
