Innovation is not an easy subject when it comes to video games, especially nowadays when dozens of titles are released every day. Since everyone now has access to powerful development tools, even non-professionals can release outstanding games, and there are way fewer unexplored niches to tap into, given the fact that every creative person can put their ideas into practice.

Insidia is an online strategy game with turn-based mechanics, in which you fight to control the map and destroy your enemy’s base, as well as to fight their champions. The interesting part is the fact that the turns are simultaneous, so you do not have to wait for your opponent to make a move before making yours. Granted, this complicates things if you are new to the genre, but there’s a great tutorial to get you started.

To begin with, you have to form a team of four champions, and each one of them comes with a specific set of skills. Some are great assassins that can move quickly around the map and strike with precision, while others are better in terms of support or taking damage. The composition of your team is very important, which is why you can come up with so many different strategies along the way.

The map has a few special areas that can be conquered having one character on them for at least three turns. Once you achieve that, a cannon automatically fires shells toward the enemy’s base for three turns, after which the conquest point is up for grabs again. Combining the abilities of your heroes allows you to score impressive combos, but it takes a while until you understand this system and learn how to make full use of it.

In fact, the gameplay mechanics as a whole can be a tad tricky to understand in the beginning, even with the tutorial. It’s also a bit of a shame that there appears to be a single map at this point, which is quite disappointing, even for an early access title. Repetition sets in quickly if the experience is not engaging enough, so it mainly depends on how appealing the mechanics are for you when you start playing.

Even if Insidia is not quite there yet in terms of gameplay and variety, the formula definitely has potential, especially thanks to the combo system, the simultaneous turns and the map control gimmick. Thus, as long as the full version comes with more maps and a longer tutorial, the game should definitely make a few devoted fans.
