There are many legendary monsters out there, most of which got famous because of movies or books that presented them to the public. Hence, there are a few almost everyone’s aware of, such as Dracula, Nosferatu, or Frankenstein’s monster. On the other hand, they rarely appear together, and it would be interesting to see a clash between them.
Clash of the Monsters is a fighting game that allows you to pick one of multiple classic monsters and use their special abilities in the ring. It’s more or less a Mortal Kombat clone, but it’s far less polished or fun. Granted, it’s also free-to-play and barely in beta, but maybe it would have been a better idea to wait until the whole thing was little more stable and refined.
As such, there are multiple characters to choose from, including famous names like Nosferatu, Dracula’s bride and Ichabod Crane. They all have different special combos that come in handy during the confrontations, but it’s very tricky to get them right, because the game is not registering the input very well. On top of it all, there are just too few unique moves to be worth the bother.
The controls are actually very badly implemented, which is not what you want to hear in a fighting game. It seems like the input is either laggy or too hasty, which even makes it difficult to navigate the menus sometimes. It’s next to impossible to achieve some of the combos without having luck on your side. Given the fact that you should be blasting combos at all times, the faulty controls are truly annoying.
Lastly, the graphics are not up to standards either, since the game looks very stiff and unpolished. Again, this wouldn’t normally be a problem for a free-to-play indie game, but it becomes noticeable when nothing else works as it should either. Moreover, the animations are terrible, especially when one of the characters tackles the other without even touching him.
In the end, Clash of the Monsters could actually make a comeback if the issues are solved, but there’s a fair number of problems with the game at this time. Hence, there’s a lot of work ahead, at least if the developer is willing to put in the effort.
