Sidescrollers went out of style a long time ago, or more precisely when the 3D era began and shooters started to provide the players with a more personal point of view on the action. However, the greatest attraction was always the challenge and the massive number of enemies you had to deal with on a regular basis, which is why there are still those who keep developing retro sidescrollers even today.

X-Bomber the Game is actually inspired by a Japanese science-fiction series and it’s about as classic as it can get when it comes to gameplay mechanics and the graphics. As such, your primary purpose is to unleash a cacophony of lasers and bombs onto a huge number of enemy ships, while trying to get the biggest high score in the meantime.

There are many different missions to choose from, each one of which puts you in a slightly different environment and challenges you to survive a variety of dangers. Whether it’s static turrets trying to bring you down or other spaceships firing their entire arsenal at you, the difficulty level is always pretty high. With enough patience, luck, and quick reflexes, the missions can be beaten and you can even secure a place in the high score hall of fame.

Just like in every other arcade classic, power-ups are an essential part of the gameplay and they can make things a lot easier for you. Whether it’s shields to protect you from incoming damage or weapon boosts to provide you with more firepower, it’s always a good thing to pick-up the bonuses. Naturally, sometimes it may be dangerous to do so, but it’s usually worth the risk.

As far as the technical aspect, the graphics look pretty nice, as long as you do not mind the classic 2D perspective. The ships and the effects are quite colorful, while the lasers can easily fill up the entire screen in a matter of seconds. As such, it can become rather difficult to see what’s going on, at least until you get used to the action.

All things considered, X-Bomber the Game is definitely what you expect it to be  if you are a sidescroller fan and you enjoy this kind of games. It comes with enough missions to keep you occupied for a long period of time, which is always good news.
