Although there are many TV series that spawned a huge number of fans all over the world, Star Trek still distinguishes itself through the fact that there are also countless movie spin-offs, trekkie conventions and video games dedicated to it, even if the actual show ended a few decades ago. Thus, the legend lives on and the new generations get to enjoy the series as well.
Star Trek: Armada is a real-time strategy game in which you get to be a part of the fascinating Star Trek universe and play as a variety of iconic races, including the Klingons and the Romulans. Obviously, you must make use of their abilities in order to win wars and put their unique skills into practice out on the battlefield, while also trying to come up with various tactics and strategies to overpower your enemies,
Story-wise, the plot follows a somewhat typical Star Trek arc, in the sense that it involves a lot events that tie together in the end and a lot of different factions are implicated in the conflict. Thus, the Romulans happen to stumble on a stable Omega Particle, which they plan on selling to the Cardassians. Things escalate quite quickly after the Borg get involved and, not long after all this, the Federation and the Klingons are part of the conflict as well.
When it comes to actually playing the game, the mechanics themselves are very similar to every other RTS out there, in the sense that you have to gather resources and try to defeat the enemy before he makes enough troops to defeat you. The two resources are ‘crew’ and ‘dilithium’, the latter of which needs to be actively gathered since you require massive amounts of it in order to fuel an army.
The simplicity can also be seen as a disadvantage, since there are no original ideas or revolutions when it comes to gameplay. On the other hand, you can be thankful that the mechanics are functional and working accordingly, which is much better than many other attempts before this. The graphics engine is quite powerful and it does a good job at rendering the environments.
All things considered, Star Trek: Armada could have used a touch of originality in its composition, but that doesn’t mean it is not very good nonetheless. Thus, if you see yourself as a trekkie and a fan of the RTS genre, then the title at hand is definitely worthy of a try.
