Hence, ever since classics like the FreeSpace series or Freelancer, the genre keeps on evolving and getting better everyday, given the modern look of franchises like X, or Dark Star One.

SpaceForce Rogue Universe is a space exploration game with heavy role-playing elements mixed in for good measure. Hence, beside the fact that you have an entire galaxy at your disposal when it comes to exploration and uncovering secrets, you also get to customize your ship and affect the world around you with the decisions you make along the way.

Speaking of which, the story talks about a not-so-distant future, one in which humankind has ventured into galactic exploration and they have stumbled into multiple civilizations. One of them attacked Earth back when people haven’t yet mastered space travel, so the Earth Military Directorate decides to form a powerful army and wipe every member of the said race from the universe.

Naturally, just wandering through the galaxy with no purpose can become repetitive and boring rather quickly, which is why the game packs a lot of other options as well. Hence, you are free to choose the desired path and play the role of a pacifist, a pirate, or a diplomat trying to gain connections with everyone. Since there are many factions and alien races present in the galaxy, the latter should be more fun than it sounds.

Not only that, but you also have complete control over your ship’s capabilities and design, which means that you can equip it with new components whenever you have enough currency. Whether you decide to follow the main plot, or just loaf around various solar systems taking down trading ships to steal their loot, upgrades are necessary and sometimes imperative.

In the end, SpaceForce Rogue Universe is the kind of game that could have been an instant blockbuster and redefined large chunks of the genre, but it just doesn’t. In fact, it looks a bit rushed and rather unrefined, not to mention the fact that it makes it very difficult for newcomers to have a taste of the genre.
