Sports simulators need to find a balance between fun and realism, because very few people would find it enjoyable to spend an hour and a half trying to make a successful pass in a soccer game. However, a smooth distribution between patience and fun is much more appreciated, as it was demonstrated so many times by the FIFA series, or Pro Evolution Soccer.

NCAA Football 99 came out when three-dimensional graphics engines were still rudimentary and slow, which meant that it took quite the risk by switching it up. However, it also managed to keep everything else almost intact, especially when it came to gameplay and the mechanics. This way, old fans of the franchise received a familiar product, while newcomers enjoyed an intuitive and easy-to-use simulator as well.

As far as the improvements made to other components, it must be mentioned that this episode features 112 teams, along with a variety of players, albeit without their real names, due to their non-professional athlete status. Hence, even if some of the stars might look like the players they emulate, none of the names are real, so you must use your imagination a bit as well.

To keep you occupied, the game features plenty of different game modes you can try out, including the well-known dynasty mode, which allows you to play with the same team for multiple seasons. However, competitions like Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl are also available, which are obviously shorter and not as complicated as the dynasty mode.

In case you are still not satisfied, the game even provides you with an in-game editor, which can be used to create your own teams and players from scratch, as well as tournaments featuring custom teams. The limited 3D graphics engine may not look like much today, but for that time it was pretty powerful and it does manage to get the point across, even if everything looks rather blocky.

Although college football may not be as popular as the NFL, NCAA Football 99 still managed to gather a crowd back in the day. Now, while this particular episode may not work on modern computers too well and no one would play it for too long, nostalgics can still have a bit of fun with it, as long as they get it to run.
