Fast-paced first-person shooters need to flow smoothly in order to captivate the players, otherwise anger makes an appearance and no one enjoys being annoyed by a video game. This is why games like Doom and Half-Life managed to make such big waves in the industry, as well as the reason why some other potentially huge releases flopped due to lack of polishing when it comes to the gameplay.

Daikatana is unfortunately part of the latter category, since it tried very hard to combine a lot of interesting elements, yet it didn’t work nearly as much on stitching them together into one fluid experience. Hence, the story is very vague and it becomes quite uninteresting after a few missions, while the difficulty level is too high and the rewards are not worth the trouble, which is always a bad move.

The year is 2455 AD and a rather weird dictatorship has taken the world, due to an evil time traveler who used the sacred Daikatana sword to go to the future and establish himself as the ruler of the entire globe. A team of three people go after him, each one of whom has different abilities and a certain skill set that can come in handy when things get difficult. You can choose any one of them in the beginning, depending on how you want to approach the mission.

As far as the arsenal is concerned, you can obviously employ the services of a katana along the way, although there are some more interesting swords to try out as well. Plenty of firearms are available, which are really difficult to use properly against the annoying enemies that keep on living until you shoot them the exact number of times every single time. Obviously, it gets frustrating and very annoying after a while, especially since you die on a regular basis from a variety of reasons.

It is also worth noting that John Romero is the one who supposedly designed and came up with the idea for this game, if that helps you get over the plethora of inconveniences you shall stumble into. The graphics are nothing too incredible either, considering that the game was ported from the consoles and you can still feel the limitations from time to time, especially when it comes to the environments.

In the end, Daikatana does not really make too much of a strong point for itself, even if it does have some interesting ideas going. The execution was pretty terrible on the other hand, as was the scenario for the main campaign and the missions themselves, which got frustrating and repetitive from the very first hour of gameplay.
