Although Chicago is still a rather well-known city around the world, it is nowhere near as famous as it was back in the prohibition era, when Al Capone managed to make millions by selling alcohol. However, he certainly did not make all that money without causing a bit of trouble, especially when it comes to dealing with the authorities and the rival gangs.

Chicago 1930 is a real-time tactics game in which you get to witness the tension between the mob and the police back in the prohibition years, with the possibility to play either side. Hence, in case you want to become the most successful gangster in history, the mob is the right place for you. However, if you intend on stopping the crime wave and rid the city of outlaws, you have the opportunity to control the police force and put an end to the mafia.

As previously mentioned, the game is an RTT, which means that you witness the action from an isometric point of view and you have complete control over multiple characters at once. You can also manually choose the items each member of your crew carries during the mission, such as weapons, bullets or medikits. The characters have a few skills as well, which can be increased by performing well out on the mission.

Chicago 1930 takes a lot of things into consideration at any given time, which means that you also have to pay a lot of attention to many different elements. As an example, it is not enough to kill the rival gang members when you are playing the mob campaign, if any people happen to pass nearby when the shootout goes on. After they are classified as witnesses, they must be dealt with as well, otherwise you risk exposing yourself to the police.

There are many other gimmicks and tactical choices that can be used over the course of the game, which should make the campaign very replayable and entertaining. As far as the technical aspect is concerned, you should not have high expectations from the graphics engine, considering the fact that it was released quite a few years ago and the top-down perspective did not require too much anyway. However, everything has been nicely drawn and the atmosphere of the city is certainly pleasant.

Chicago 1930 certainly does not excel in any particular way, but taken as a whole, the game is pretty well made and it can provide you with a few hours of tactics and entertainment. The fact that you can play as either the cops or the mob makes the story that much more interesting, since you get to witness it from both perspectives.
