Momodora III Demo

Simple 8-bit platformers seem to be making a comeback lately, despite the technological trends. In essence, people still find running around and jumping from one platform to the other entertaining, regardless of the graphics used to render these mechanics. As such, there are plenty examples out there you can try if the genre makes you curious, amongst which you can count the title at hand as well.

Momodora III is a retro-platformer that’s part of a mildly successful series, yet it still managed to stay afloat and even create some hype around itself lately. However, the game is as simple as it can get for a platformer, which means that all you have to do is clear the levels and defeat the bosses at the end, while also collecting objects and talking with other people.

Speaking of which, there are two characters you can choose from in the beginning of the game, depending on how difficult you want your adventure to be. Hence, you can either start with no considerable handicap, or choose to get a few bonuses right from the beginning, which should make your progress much easier. The fun is in the challenge, however, so you’d definitely have more of a good time if you don’t make everything too easy.

Along the way, you can find a variety of items and weapons that can be equipped, which are used to increase your powers. Hence, as you keep on equipping better and better gear, the battles become that much simpler, although you still have to watch out for a few things that can cause insta-death at the slightest contact, such as explosions.

The 8-bit graphics are detailed enough to inspire life into the landscapes and the characters, although the latter also take advantage of a few basic animations. Despite the technical limitations, you can still get into the story and form bonds with the characters, especially thanks to the dialogue sections and the cutscenes.

Momodora III manages to be a good continuation for the series and a pretty successful game on its own. The difficulty level may be a bit discouraging for some people, but the overall product is nicely polished and clean. The story is interesting and the characters can even turn out to be memorable.
