Bioshock is a first-person shooter game with elements of role-playing where players will have to fight their way through a partially destroyed, underwater city.

The game is set in a parallel universe where business magnate Andrew Ryan decides to build an underwater city where the elite can prosper without the interference from the governments. Ryan has uncovered ADAM, a plasmid that allows the human body to gain out of the ordinary abilities like telekinesis and pyrokinesis.

His dreams of an isolated utopia are shattered as Fontaine, former gangster turned businessman, wants control of the city. Fontaine's researchers develop a cheaper way to harvest ADAM: by implanting the plasmid creating slug into the stomach of orphan little girls. Ryan fights back by creating an army of defenders for these Little Sisters and another army of enhanced soldiers, Splicers, to defend him. And so the war begins...

Players will take control of Jack as his plane crashes into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The year is 1960, a year after the devastating war that left very few survivors in Rapture, the underwater city.

The arsenal is more varied as one would think. Melee and ranged weapons can be equipped and even enhanced by using the dollars collected on the vending machines scattered along the city. These machines can also sell ammo, health or additional equipment.

Besides its weapons, the player will also be able to use the DNA modifying plasmids. There are two different plasmids users can equip: the passive plasmids (enhance some abilities) that don't require EVE to function and the active plasmids (can be used as weapons) that require EVE to properly work. EVE is a like the mana from role-playing games and it can be recovered through syringes.

Visually, the game is a masterpiece, specially for the year 2007 (the year it was launched). The underwater city is beautifully depicted and the water effects remain great until the present day.

With some frightening elements, a lot of gorgeous scenes and unique gameplay, Bioshock was a game changer for first-person shooter genre and remains a great challenge for the generations ahead.
