Go from the Stone Age to the Space Age as quickly as you can in this multiplayer strategy game with isometric graphics. #Strategy game #Real-time strategy #Multiplayer strategy #Strategy #Multiplayer #Real-time
Strategy games are far from a new invention, given the fact that the RTS genre is three decades old at this point. Naturally, the mechanics have evolved in the meantime, especially after games like C&C and StarCraft have come around. On the other hand, there’s always room for improvement, especially in the gameplay department.
Ways of History is a top-down strategy game with 3D battles, in which the focus is on the building aspect and your ability to make the most out of your resources. On top of that, the multiplayer is a big part of the game, because you are actively competing with other players after a certain point in your civilization’s development. In fact, you can join forces with them as well, although there are some issues in this regard.
As mentioned before, it all starts in the Stone Age, so your first tasks are quite simple, such as building shacks and various other facilities that can be upgraded later on. However, it takes real time to build things or perform upgrades, so no matter how much you play, there’s always a time barrier preventing you from advancing too quickly. This is a bit of a bummer in a game where you have to compete with players who have started the game way before you.
Making your way through the tech three also allows your civilization to advance, and things get difficult when you get the option to join a country with other players. As mentioned before, some players have the advantage of time, and there’s no way to defeat that, which is why veterans can easily bully new players and force them to join their countries, or suffer defeat in a matter of hours.
Since this is a free-to-play game, there are in-app purchases that allow you to move things along a bit faster, which is yet another disadvantage to some players if they do not have the currency to spend on the game. As far as the graphics are concerned, they are not bad, but you can tell that the whole thing was designed to run in a browser, so don’t expect anything too great either.
In the end, Ways of History is not a bad idea, but the fact that old players have so much power can really make it difficult for newbies to get into the game. The in-app purchases can skew the balance of power even more, so the developers really need to think of something else to fix things.
