MMOs provide players with unparalleled freedom and a lot of options when it comes to character development or story progression. However, they also require a lot of spare time in order to feel like you are getting somewhere, especially since you have to compete with people who do nothing but play all day. Hence, the asynchronous genre was invented a few years ago, and although it does not usually offer as much complexity as a real MMO, it’s a lot easier to get into.

Therian Saga is an interesting MMO with asynchronous gameplay, in which you can go on quests, learn how to craft items and explore a nice world without having to spend hours upon hours in front of the computer. Hence, the main idea is that you give your hero tasks and let him/her complete them while you do something else and check back on the game at a later time.

After you create a character for the first time the game presents you with a tutorial that shows you everything you need to know about the interface and how everything works. There are multiple classes and specializations to choose for your character as well, depending on whether you want to be an expert stone cutter or craft interesting items. Naturally, each one of these professions can be exploited to acquire wealth if you devise a good strategy.

As mentioned before, the main idea is that your input is not required in order for the hero to go on quests or do anything else. Hence, you can stop playing at any time and let the AI take care of everything, although the automation might not always take the best decisions. It’s even possible to quit playing in the middle of a battle with another player, at least if you trust the AI enough to do that.

The technical aspects of the game are not particularly impressive, as it’s to be expected from the genre. You play from a classic top-down view and use the mouse to interact with your hero and the interface, and there’s certainly no rush to click as fast as possible. The artwork is actually very nice, especially when it comes to map design and the characters, but don’t expect anything too great either.

Therian Saga is as simple as advertised, which is great news if you do not have time for hardcore MMOs that require hundreds of hours of active gameplay. The class system is very intriguing, and there’s more than enough content to keep you busy for a long time.
