CCGs is a very hot topic at the moment, especially since there are so many titles to choose from, as well as many interesting concepts that try to set themselves apart from the rest of the crowd. Thus, whether you want a sci-fi universe or something that features elves and wizards, the range of choices is satisfying enough to please most gamers, regardless of how picky they are.
Smash Up is a CCG with a few new ideas you might find interesting, in which the core concept is more or less the same as in every other game in the genre: defeat the enemy using a better strategy. However, unlike Hearthstone or various other similar titles, the deck you use is a combination of two different factions you can choose before each match.
These factions include Dinosaurs, Geeks and Pirates, so there’s definitely enough variety to keep things interesting for a long time. On the other hand, it might be a tad difficult to understand the mechanics and the rules at first, even if they are not overly complicated. In essence, each player must play cards and try to win specific bases by having the most points played on the said bases.
Although you have the option to practice in single player using the AI, the real fun is in multiplayer, where up to four players can engage in combat at the same time. Each faction combination delivers a unique set of possible strategies, especially since the cards have all sorts of unique powers that come in handy in a variety of situations. However, it’s very important to pay attention to what the enemy is doing, otherwise your moves might not have the desired effect.
In regards to graphics, everything is more or less how you expect, given the fact that there’s nothing to see but the cards themselves and the occasional artwork. This shouldn’t be a problem for the fans of the genre, because most of your attention is directed toward the actual matches instead of the graphics. Moreover, the music is pretty good, even if it gets repetitive after a while.
All things considered, Smash Up is quite the interesting strategy game, as well as a unique CCG in its own rights. Thus, if you are up for something difference and you do not mind a slightly steeper difficulty curve, Smash Up can easily keep you busy for a few hours.
