Quests are a quintessential part of RPGs and adventure games, and nowadays most titles feature hundreds of them, even if most are basically the same when you get right down to it. However, you might have wondered what it would be like to be the quest giver instead, and there already are a few games based on this idea, although not many got it right.
Guild Quest is an interesting adventure game in which you have to send people on quests and loot the fruits of their labor in order to afford to give even more quests. The whole thing takes place on islands, and you can use the gold you find in order to buy even larger islands, which obviously have more treasure and tougher quests. It’s also possible to collect powerful items along the way, so the journey is certainly exciting.
The game starts with a short tutorial to show you the basics, but the mechanics are actually simple enough to be figured out on your own. In short, you start with a handful of “guildians”, which can be sent on quests in specific locations around the map. Each quest costs a certain amount of gold, and they can be upgraded as well. The end goal is to conquer the entire island and defeat the bosses waiting for you in the last areas.
After you are done with one island, you are allowed to move on and tackle another one, although the difficulty level increases along the way. Thankfully, boss fights usually provide you with special cards that can be equipped, and these make your guildians stronger and more resilient. On top of that, you also receive massive rewards after you complete all the objects on an island.
Since the game is but one step away from a clicker, your units continue to generate wealth and complete quests even when you are not in-game. Moreover, you can also invest real money in order to speed things along, but at least there aren’t any pay-to-win situations. The graphics could use more work, on the other hand, since they are a bit too basic when it comes to artwork and interface.
Even if Guild Quest has its flaws and annoyances at the moment, it can certainly get a lot better in the future, given the fact that it’s barely in early access right now. Hence, it’s worth keeping an eye on the project, especially since it’s free-to-play.
