A Western shooter mixing first and third-person viewpoints, this simplistically entitled game is far from a simple shooter in chaps and a holster. This original story follows the life of Colton White, reared as a mountain man in Montana close to the headwaters of Missouri. He accompanies his father, Ned White, to a steamboat to meet a friend, and quickly after, all hell breaks loose. The game offers free-roaming exploration as well as set story missions and side missions.
Gun does not have a standard level structure. Instead, Neversoft has opted to use a free roaming interface similar to Grand Theft Auto. The transition from hunting to boarding the steamer is seamless. The training you go through
during the hunting portion is also fairly seamless, and tells you about some of the important features in the game.
Many of the guns you'll acquire throughout the game will allow you to switch from third person mode, to first person mode. In addition, there is a Quick Draw mode that's only available with the pistol. Quick Draw slows the action down to bullet time speed and allows you to take out several enemies in rapid succession like you've seen in old western movies. To help make this process even easier, Neversoft has included the ability to move from one target to the next with a quick flick of the analog stick and an auto-aim feature. A meter in the bottom left portion of the screen limits the amount of time you can spend in Quick Draw mode, but you can quickly refill this by landing a few head shots.
Speaking of the controls in Gun, first person shooter fans should be happy. The game controls almost exactly like a standard issue first person shooter. The two analog sticks control your movement, R1 shoots, R2 activates the Quick Draw mode, L2 crouches, pressing left or right on the d-pad allows you to lean in either direction, and pressing up on the d-pad will give your character a quick shot of whiskey to replenish some health. The Square button gives you the ability to use a melee attack, which will vary depending on the weapons you have, and can be used in close combat.
