Tradewinds Legends: Unlikely Heroes is a strategy game with an emphasis on the trading aspect, because your main goal is to transport goods between cities by ship and try to make a profit as often as possible. Just like in the old days, the seas are crawling with pirates that are after easy prey, which is why it is important that you arm yourself with plenty of cannons as well.

Although you can experience the game in a structured campaign and advance from mission to mission like in every other strategy title, it is also possible to opt for the free trading mode. That way, you are not constrained by anything other than your own ambition, because the sea is at your disposal, and everything is possible as long as you know what to do. Naturally, it may be better to start with the campaign if you are a beginner.

In case you are feeling extra confident, you also have the option to borrow money from questionable sources, which need to be paid back with interest. Although it may sound risky, it is sometimes the only way to get a good start, unless you hit the jackpot with a lucky trade. Speaking of which, the trading aspect is quite flawed, in the sense that it doesn’t really matter what you buy as long as it is relatively cheap. If you wait long enough, the prices are going to rise in one of the cities from around the map.

To make matters more interesting, random encounters with pirates are a constant concern as well. In order to deal with them, your ships must be equipped with cannons, although that may not be enough in some cases. Thankfully, you have the option to upgrade the said cannons, as well as increase your fleet with additional ships. The actual battles are nothing more than simple clickfests, but you can at least change the ammo every once in a while.

All things considered, Tradewinds Legends: Unlikely Heroes is certainly not the best in its class, but it’s quite entertaining in short bursts. Not only that, but it at least allows you to get started with the genre if you are not ready for the big games.
