Mysteries and strange occurrences seem to be happening all around the world, at least if the ‘based on a true story’ tag in movies is to be trusted. On the other hand, mysteries represent the bread and butter of the point-and-click adventure games, because without them, there would be no puzzles to solve and no great secrets to reveal.
Time Stand Still is a classic exploration game in which you have to both navigate intriguing environments and try to come up with solutions to various riddles. Although the puzzles are not as intricate or as difficult as they might be in regular adventure games, the visuals are a tad more striking and the fact that they are actually edited photographs makes things feel more real as well.
Story-wise, the events revolve around the young Carol, a British girl who moves to Sweden in an attempt to start over. As she starts to get acquainted with the town and get in tune with her surroundings, she stumbles into a bit of a mystery, involving a haunted house and an unsolved murder dating back to the second World War. Naturally, you play Carol’s role and you must help her unravel the secrets behind this.
Since a large chunk of the game is all about exploration, a lot of work went into portraying the city in which the action takes place. Thanks to the good work of the level designers, you really do feel like strolling through museums and out on the streets. A lot of attention was devoted to details as well, since important objects can be carefully examined from up close.
As previously mentioned, the puzzles themselves are nothing out of the ordinary, since you usually have to find certain items or figure out how to get past a locked door. Your eyes should have a good time at least, because the visual chapter is exquisite and the imagery is definitely capable to have you completely immersed in the atmosphere.
All things considered, Time Stand Still is the kind of game that relaxes you after a long day of work, because it doesn’t ask much of you and it gives a lot in return. Thus, casual adventure fans should give this a try and not worry too much about whether the puzzles are worth it or not.
