Living underwater has its advantages, and fish could probably attest to that if they had the ability to speak. SpongeBob Squarepants is a very popular cartoon series that takes place under the sea, and it would appear that life beneath the ocean is very much like what we experience on dry land, except with more tentacles. Naturally, there are video games depicting this world as well, just in case watching the cartoons is not enough.

SpongeBob SquarePants Krabby Quest is a puzzle game in which your purpose is to help the lovable SpongeBob find and collect all the Krabby Patties that Plankton has stolen. In essence, the gameplay is not very complicated, but the levels get increasingly more difficult as you manage to pass them. A variety of new obstacles make an appearance on a regular basis, which force you to change your strategy multiple times.

Story-wise, all you need to know is that Plankton blows up Krabby’s place, only to send thousands of Krabby Patties flying through the air all over Bikini Bottom. In an attempt to recover their goods, SpongeBob and Patrick go on an adventure, while avoiding the traps preventing them from reaching the burgers and returning them to the restaurant.

The levels are actually more like mazes, because they are tough to navigate, and you must remember paths in order to avoid nasty traps. There are tentacles and spikes that block your way, but you can press buttons to deactivate them. Some of these buttons require constant pressure in order to stay pressed, which is why it comes in handy to switch between the two characters.

It is also possible to move boxes and perform a variety of other actions to solve the puzzles. However, none of the riddles is too difficult to solve either, because of the target audience. The visual quality is nothing to stand in awe of either, although the graphics engine is in 3D. You are forced to use a top-down perspective, on the other hand, which is primarily because it comes in handy to have an eagle eye view of the maze.

All things considered, SpongeBob SquarePants Krabby Quest is not a brilliant game, but it is quite fun to tackle the puzzles, especially since both Patrick and SpongeBob are present. Hence, every fan of the series should give it a try, at least to see whether it’s their cup of tea or not.
