Ever since Need for Speed: Underground and Fast and Furious have made street racing popular, a lot more people have started to customize their cars with flashy bumpers and spoilers. As one might expect, the street racing genre gained a lot of attention as well, which is why many other games have tried to make a name for themselves in the following years. Some have succeeded in their task, while others barely made it to the public’s attention.
Midnight Outlaw: Six Hours to SunUp is an arcade racing sim that features a variety of powerful cars and the possibility to customize them as you see fit, although you are still pretty limited in this regard. The main attraction of the game is the fact that you always have to keep an eye out for the police, otherwise you might get busted and ruin your street cred. The simulation itself is rather disappointing, because the car handling has nothing to do with reality.
As with most street racing games, the events take place at night, which means that the road is pretty clear of traffic. There are multiple types of races, as well as a variety of game modes to choose from, depending on what you are in the mood for. Obviously, the career mode is where you can earn money and respect, as well as customize the vehicles to fit your preferences.
Even if almost none of the games in the genre feature realistic handling or convincing physics, they are at least fun to play, if nothing else. In this case, however, the car handling is atrocious, regardless of whether you choose to use the keyboard or a dedicated controller. The cars behave erratically on the road, not to mention the fact that you cannot really depend on intuition to take corners or slide into drifts.
The custom parts you can buy do not seem to have any impact on the performance of your vehicles either, except that they go slightly faster with each upgrade. The visual quality is disappointing to say the least, because the cars look awful and there’s no joy in tuning them, given the fact that they are blocky and unremarkable either way.
At the end of the day, there aren’t too many reasons to give Midnight Outlaw: Six Hours to SunUp a try, because there’s nothing to gain by doing so. Everything about the game is subpar or mediocre at best, which is why you may as well replay one of the old classics instead.
