From time to time, people can run out of ideas about what to do next, especially in an industry that’s based on creativity and original thought. Video games may not be regarded to be as high on the food chain as books or movies, but they require just as much planning, preparation, and talent in order to be pulled off, which is why it doesn’t always go according to plan.
Froggy Shoot Out is pretty straightforward when it comes to the main theme and gameplay purpose, since it spells it out in its name to begin with. Hence, do not expect too much depth or complexity, since it is all about shooting cowboy frogs and using a six-shooter to make your way through a Wild West-themed town. It may not be brilliant, but it’s something you don’t see every day at least.
Story-wise, the only thing you need to know is that the other frogs are bad people, otherwise you wouldn’t be forced to shoot them on sight. Obviously, there’s always the fact that they would do the same to you if you give them the chance. Not much else is part of the equation, but you do get to explore a variety of locations around town, including the bank, the stables and a saloon.
Just like in any other shooter, the enemies get tougher as you keep on defeating them and getting closer to the final level. Although they are rather simple to put down in the beginning, they start coming in greater numbers toward the end and they also become a tad more difficult to kill. To top things off, the sheriff awaits for you at the end of the final level, which technically can be considered a boss fight.
Visually, there’s nothing to really impress about the game, since not a low of work went into the graphics engine, nor into the environments you get to explore. Everything lacks proper shading and the textures are barely distinguishable in some cases, not to mention the ugly character models and the equally ugly particle effects inspiring some life into the shootouts.
In the end, Froggy Shoot Out may be unique and different from everything else out there, but that doesn’t make it good. Although it does have the potential to keep you playing for maybe five minutes, the joke gets old pretty quickly and you are soon looking for something else to play.
