DX-Ball 2 Demo
Enjoy a retro-style Breakout game with more than enough levels to keep you busy for a long time. #DX Ball #Brick breaker #Breakout remake #Breakout #Arkanoid #Ball
Video games do not always need to be original and thought-provoking, because sometimes it’s enough to have a bit of mindless fun. Hence, trivial games like Tetris and Snake are the perfect solution in certain situations, even if they look almost exactly the same as they did back when they were first developed a couple of decades ago.
DX-Ball 2 is not an original concept and it makes no such ludicrous claims either, especially since it quite clearly emulates Arkanoid and Breakout. However, the fun is undeniably there, especially if you have enjoyed the games mentioned earlier back in their time. The additions are comprised of a few new power-ups and a large number of levels you can tackle.
As such, the gameplay mechanics are exactly the same, which means that your role is to keep the ball bouncing using the paddle, while trying to break every block. Every now and again a power-up is spawned by one of the destroyed blocks, but they are not all good. In fact, some of them can instantly kill you if you pick them up, while others shrink the paddle and make it considerably more difficult to keep the ball in the air.
To make matters more interesting, there are sometimes hidden blocks spread around the level, which become visible only when the ball touches them. Hence, you can easily be fooled and fail to catch the ball after an unexpected ricochet, which is part of the fun. The key to beating some of the levels is to strike a specific block, which is obviously not that easy to reach.
The most disappointing part about the game is its appearance, because it barely looks like an improvement over the old NES games. Most of the textures are in very low resolution, while the particle effects are laughable at best. The sound is hilarious as well, although it can be funny under the right circumstances, namely if you are in a good mood. Otherwise, it’s just one more annoyance on the pile.
In the end, DX-Ball 2’s goal is to entertain you, and it can do that in a matter of minutes. The frustration has always been part of the equation in the genre, so if you consider yourself a fan, then this should be exactly what you expect it to be.
