Fantasy tales always seem to talk about elves, dwarves and dragons, maybe because that’s what Tolkien did in his original works. Hence, it looks like very few modern storytellers take the liberty to add anything interesting to the mix, such as new concepts, races or myths. It can get boring after a while, especially if you dwelve in the genre a lot.
Aveyond II: Ean's Quest is a top-down role-playing game that takes its inspiration from the classics of the genre, such as Final Fantasy and the like. The story is a lot less modern than it was in the FF series, but most of the gameplay mechanics are very similar to it. Combat is an important part of the adventure, as always, although story and dialog are also pretty vital.
To begin with, the story talks about a boy by the name of Ean, who is an elf living in the Vale. The Vale is hidden from the normal world, which means that they are safe from any kind of harm from outsiders. However, one of his friends disappears one day, which forces Ean to start a crusade to get her back. Along the way, the quest gets darker and far more dangerous, and it is up to you to survive the perils.
The gameplay is part exploration and part combat, although it can get rather repetitive after a point. Most of the fights are the same, which means that once you figure out how to win once, you’ll be able to do it again with ease. Thankfully, better equipment can always be bought or found by looting the bodies of your fallen enemies, and that gives you the necessary boost to keep going.
Visually, you shouldn’t expect an awful lot from Aveyond II: Ean's Quest, especially since it sports a top-down perspective. Everything is designed using tiles, so it obviously gets repetitive after a point. However, the level design is not bad at all, since every area is somewhat different from the last, and there are usually many small objects decorating every part of the map.
While Aveyond II: Ean's Quest is certainly not the kind of game to compete with the heavyweights of the genre, it’s still good enough to provide anyone with a few relaxing hours. Hence, if you don’t consider yourself a hardcore RPG player, the game at hand is more than enough to provide you with an adventure.
