Mods have a way of getting the best out of video games, sometimes. That’s not to say that they turn out better than the official games, but in some cases they do manage to get a lot more popular. Hence, Counter-Strike is now the preferred multiplayer shooter instead of Half-Life, while Dota 2 is miles ahead of Blizzard’s Warcraft 3 at this point.

Smite might appear to be your typical DotA clone at a glance, but there’s something more to it once you start playing. Make no assumptions, however, because this is still a DotA ripoff and most of the stuff you’ll run into is taken directly from there, but don’t dismiss it immediately either. In fact, the game is about as fun as a MOBA of this caliber can turn out to be, especially when you consider the fact that it’s a lot more action-oriented than most similar games.

The heroes you get to use are actually gods taken from mythologies around the world, including illustrious names like Thor and Poseidon. Each one of these gods has powerful spells and abilities you can use on the battlefield, but in a much more direct and personal manner. That is because the game is played from a third-person perspective, which makes the action a tad more exciting.

To differentiate itself from the rest of the MOBAs, the game includes a few unique game modes, each one of which tries to provide you with an original experience. Hence, the Arena mode is basically an open fight between two teams of five gods, with neutrals playing the role of the cannon fodder and the usual towers protecting the bases. There are a few other modes to try out, including one that’s basically Dota all over again.

As previously mentioned, the game is still a MOBA, which means that you have the chance to build items, level-up, use powerful abilities and generally try to overpower the enemy team. The items are a tad too generic and pointless at first, but the bonuses they offer should come in handy in certain situations. Moreover, the graphics are top-notch, and you can certainly enjoy and feel each spell your god casts on the battlefield.

When it’s all said and done, Smite does not reinvent the wheel, but it tries to smooth it out a little bit and make it slightly rounder. There’s definitely more action involved, but if you are looking for strategy, it might be a bit more difficult to put intricate tactics into play here than it is in the other MOBAs.
