One of the oldest and most popular game franchises on the market at the moment is The Elder Scrolls, which has a history of over two decades at this point. In fact, almost every generation of gamers has its own favorite TES game, starting with Arena back in 1994, all the way to Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim later on. They each provide players with a unique experience gameplay-wise, but the exciting fact is that the universe is the same every time.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends is a deck building game and one of the few non-RPG titles in the franchise, which might make some people wary quality-wise, given the fact that the studio does not have a lot of experience in the genre. On the other hand, the rules and the cards are what matter in a CCG, which means that it shouldn’t be that difficult for a huge studio like Bethesda to create something worthwhile.

The gameplay is more or less similar to what you might have experienced in MTG or Hearthstone, but it does feature some interesting new elements as well. Thus, you start with a few cards in your hand and you must play them using magicka. You gain one additional magicka point after each round, which allows you to play more powerful cards and change your strategies accordingly.

The first major difference from most CCGs is the fact that the play area is usually split into two lanes, which means that creatures can only attack within their own lane. This is not universally true, because some cards have special abilities that allow them to bypass this, but it makes the gameplay a lot more dynamic, especially since you have to maintain balance between the two lanes. It’s also fun to launch offensives by concentrating your efforts onto a single lane, although that’s a pretty obvious tactic.

Other new gimmicks include the addition of runes, which are basically there to help you recover after taking heavy damage. Each hero has three runes, and when destroyed you automatically draw a new card from the deck in between rounds. This provides you with an additional change to fight back and stay in the game, although it’s obviously not as fun when you see the enemy take advantage of this feature as well.

All things considered, The Elder Scrolls: Legends is a decent CCG and quite a worthy member of the TES family, but you need a few hours of serious gameplay to make up your mind in regards to its quality. Hence, it’s a polished and good-looking game, but it may not be what you are looking for if you come from Hearthstone or other CCGs.
