There are plenty of fantasy MMOs out there, each one of which features a slightly different combination of orcs, dwarves, and elves. Naturally, this formula got old and boring a long time ago, so it’s no wonder that people are asking for something new. While titles like World of Warcraft have no choice but to stick to what they know, new games have the opportunity to try something different.

Navy Field 2 has a novel approach to the MMO genre, and it tries to blend a variety of new elements together, in the hopes that something interesting comes out at the other end. While the overall product is not exactly bad, this isn’t a brilliant game either, because it has plenty of problems when it comes to gameplay, as well as a rather cheap atmosphere that doesn’t stick with you for very long.

As it is customary, you start by creating an alter ego, which in this case is a captain to command the ships at your disposal. Not a lot can be changed at this point, or at any point, unfortunately, because the customization options are rather poor all around. In essence, you do get to unlock better ships as you go along, as well as improve the ones you already have, but a lot more emphasis is put on the actual battles than on what you use to go through them.

Unlike your usual MMO, this actually uses watered down RTS mechanics and a top-down view to render the action, which might come as a surprise to most of you. It’s not a bad thing per se, but the controls are rather annoying in the beginning. You can also create fleets and use them to fight in slightly more large-scale battles, which require a more tactical approach.

Technically, the game does not excel, especially when you consider the top-down perspective and the usually barren landscapes. A few ships, explosions, and lots of water comprise most of the things you get to see, with the occasional low-poly island thrown in there every once in a while. Even so, you can get over it if you are having enough fun with the units, but that’s not always the case.

All things considered, Navy Field 2 could have been a lot more interesting with the right approach, but it somehow ended being way too linear and boring. However, it can be entertaining every once in a while, at least if you manage to get involved in a nice battle.
